Submissions
The Rambler accepts submissions for nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and artwork. There is no minimum length, but we request that submissions be no more than 8,000 words. While we are open to a variety of subjects, please do not send genre fiction such as science fiction, horror, romance, or children's stories.
Writing Guidelines
All submissions should be typed, double-spaced (poems may be single-spaced), with the writer's contact information–name, address, phone number, and email address–on the first page. Cover letters are helpful, just to let us know a little about you. Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for our reply; manuscripts will be returned only if you include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for that purpose with sufficient postage. Please submit completed works. Multiple submissions are fine, but we prefer not to receive simultaneous ones. If you do send simultaneous submissions, please note it in your cover letter. Fiction and nonfiction submissions may be sent by mail or email. Please send your submission as a Word or rtf document attached to your email. All poetry should be submitted by mail at this time. Be assured that each submission is read with care, and that we will notify you of your work's status as soon as possible.
While we understand the joy of writing for writing's sake, we also believe that writers should be compensated for their work. Payment varies and is paid on publication. We will send you a copy of the issue featuring your work, and contributors also receive a one-year subscription to the magazine.
Artwork Guidelines
We consider photography, illustrations, paintings, and other artwork to accompany pieces in the magazine and we offer an opportunity for artists to showcase their work in our portfolio section of the magazine. The portfolio is several pages of full color including an introduction page (once work has been accepted for the portfolio section, we invite the artist to write an introduction to the piece, usually about 500 words).
We can receive submissions by email or CD, or you are welcome to mail slides or prints. For anything submitted in the mail, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope with sufficient postage for the work to be returned. If emailing, you can send files as jpgs–72 dpi is fine at this stage, but please make the physical size big enough to get a good idea of the artwork (no thumbnails).
